HONORING PEOPLE BY PLANTING TREES
Did you know that a “Commemorative Giving Program” for the Mary Elizabeth Street Tree Endowment was launched in 1995 to encourage grass-roots financial support for the Providence Neighborhood Planting Program?
As most readers of Tree Talk realize, the Endowment and the City of Providence co-fund the Providence Neighborhood Planting Program, which has made possible the planting of over 4000 street trees by more than 400 neighborhood groups since 1989! To date ------ has been added to the Endowment through this “Commemorative Giving Program” to help beautify our city.
Honoring people by planting trees is an ancient custom, appropriate to many occasions - to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, graduation, marriage, birth, special event, holiday, Arbor Day, gift to a teacher or to memorialize someone. It brings pleasure and good health to both present and future generations. Using this concept, the “Commemorative Giving Program” now provides an attractive way for people to honor and memorialize persons of their choice, while at the same time greatly benefiting the city. Although no single tree will be planted in an Honoree’s name, a contribution invested in the Endowment’s principal will produce income throughout the years to plant trees for continuing generations – a gift that is truly a symbol of continuing life!
