Day Of Planting Requirements
Have tree holes dug out by the morning of your planting. If you dig your holes out the night before, please put saw horses around or empty trash cans in (upside down) your hole so no one will fall in.
Have enough neighbors involved so that you have a few people for each tree, so that we can plant at the same time, rather than have the same three people plant all the trees.
Have several hoses hooked up and available for watering. What you can`t reach, have buckets available. TREES MUST BE WATERED the day they are planted and thereafter.
Tools Needed: Shovels (one per person,) pruning shears, an old saw to cut twine and root ball, and brooms
Other Suggestions
Encourage neighbors to come out and help plant even if they didn`t get a tree. It is a good way to meet people. Involve the neighborhood children. Kids need to learn about trees and nature, and will be more gentle with trees if they are involved.
Have refreshments on hand for planters--make it into a block party! City Hall can help you close off your street for a bbq!
Call your council person and invite him/her to your planting. All council members are aware of when plantings are in their neighborhoods, but an invitation from you is always a good idea as well. Council members who see that residents are serious about cleaning up their neighborhoods are more likely to respond to requests for trees, sidewalk repair, park clean up, etc.
Have materials on hand to put up small barriers, such as fencing, to keep animals out of the tree well. Barriers also help keep car doors from dinging fragile trees and keeps bikes from being locked to the tree, etc.
