US Forest Service
This excellent site succinctly helps citizens create community green spaces. It encourages both experts and amateurs to plant and grow trees correctly, and to properly maintain new and older plantings. It is designed to be used in contract planting specifications for all public and private tree planting projects. It includes guidelines, illustrations, and a detailed checklist
for all your urban tree-planting projects.

 
The National Tree Trust
The National Tree Trust was established in 1990 to mobilize volunteer groups, promote public awareness of trees and their benefits, provide grants, and unite civic and corporate institutions in support of local tree planting and education projects throughout the United States. Their mission is to act as a catalyst for local volunteer groups in the growing, planting, and maintenance of trees in rural communities, urban areas, and along our nation's highways.

The Trust for Public Land's site includes a New England page which has some articles of local interest, including "The Greening of Providence," in addition to some general information and resources.
 
The Urban Environmental Initiative (EPA)
In urban areas throughout New England, residents are exposed to a multitude of environmental and public health hazards. The Urban Environmental Initiative (UEI) is a pilot program launched in 1995 in EPA New England to address the range of environment and public health problems facing urban residents in the targeted urban cities of Boston, MA; Providence, RI; and Hartford, CT. Detailed information on each city's particular program is available.
